How to Store Coffee
By Marie Winters
Have you been searching for the best way to have that perfect cup of coffee?! Well, you’ve come to the right place! Here is one of the easiest tips to have that great tasting brew in the morning: store coffee beans properly! Sounds simple, right? Like anything in life, coffee beans need to be taken care of, so read along for some simple steps to ensure quality, freshness, and taste!
First of all, timing is crucial. Make sure to only buy enough beans for a short amount of time. Three weeks’ worth is more than enough! Even better, just purchase enough coffee beans for the week and keep with that schedule. There is no need for an excess amount of coffee that will either go bad or go to waste. Don’t get overwhelmed…you’ll get the hang of it in no time!
How to store beans correctly to maximize freshness and taste:
-
Seal coffee beans in an airtight container that doesn’t let any light in.
-
Store in a cool, dark place.
-
Always choose a cabinet instead of on the countertop
-
Only buy the amount of coffee you will use in a few weeks
-
Long story short, don’t freeze coffee beans. The beans will absorb other smells in the freezer. No one wants to taste leftovers in a cup of coffee! Plus, fresh-tasting joe cannot be beat. (Same goes for refrigerating coffee, it will deteriorate much faster.)
An expert’s timeline…
-
When purchasing beans, make sure there’s a recent roasting date.
-
Whole beans should be used within four weeks.
-
Ground beans should be used within two weeks.
-
Drink your room-temperature coffee within 12 hours.
-
Store brewed coffee for three to four days in the refrigerator.
-
Instant coffee should be used within two weeks of opening, except we don’t condone that behavior.
Here are some helpful tips that every coffee drinker should know, whether you are a novice coffee drinker or a lifelong experienced coffee drinker.
-
Whole beans last the longest and will maintain fresh quality
-
Grind the beans right before you’re ready to drink a cup
-
Make sure to only grind what you need, no need to have ground beans in your cabinet!
